Palman Daejanggyeong (Tripitaka Koreana) : Ha Jikwon

Haeinsa Temple Janggyeong Panjeon, registered as UNESCO World Heritage, has recently been nominated as one of the 10 most beautiful libraries in the world. As the news was reported I personally recalled a special connection with the Tripitaka koreana.

In the year of 2001, I started working on the restoration of the Haeinsa Temple Tripitaka koreana and finished the digital restoration in 2007. The restoration work was computerized through taking a picture of every woodblock of the Tripitaka koreana and making it searchable on internet. The whole process was tougher than expected due to the tedious and repetitive daily operation. However, I was deeply moved by the value of big data and the meaning coming from UNESCO World Heritage.

The work goes on till now. I make digital images out of photos I take visiting the places that have the complete collection of Buddhism. I still have no idea how I ended up here, but whenever I look into the writings in the Tripitaka koreana it genuinely drags me into a profound absorption.
