Hwaseong Fortress : Han Youngsoo

After taking part in bitter frontline fighting as a young South Korean soldier during the Korean War (1950–53),
Han returned to everyday life at the war’s end and found a devastated city. Choosing photography as a profes-
sion, he witnessed a period of profound transformation in South Korea that saw the rapid creation of a modern city and urban society. And his photographs tell this story by offering a fascinating window onto the everyday lives of the city’s ordinary men, women, and children. Seen from today’s vantage point, his photographs come as a surprise. With their impeccable composition, flawless timing, and scrupulous attention to social detail, they suggest the work of a long-lost Korean cousin of such early Magnum photographers as Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour (Chim), and Marc Riboud. Although after 1966 Han turned his attention to running a successful studio specializing in advertising and fashion photography, his photographs in the postwar decade remain one of the richest and most humanly sympathetic visual records of those years.

한국전쟁(1950-1953)에 참전해 최전선에서 전투를 치러야 했던 한영수는 전쟁이 끝난 후 황폐해진 도시의 모습을 마주해야했다. 사진작가의 길을 선택한 그는 현대화된 도시가 탄생하는 엄청난 변화의 시기를 목격할 수 있었다. 그리고 그의 사진들은도시의 평범한 사람들의 일상생활을 담아냄으로써 이러한 변화를 이야기하고 있다.
오늘날의 관점에서 본다면 그의 사진들은 놀라움으로 다가 온다. 흠잡을 곳 없는 구도와 완벽한 타이밍, 그리고 사회 구석구석에대한 세심한 관심은 앙리 카르티에 브레송(Henri Cartier-Bresson)이나 데이비드 시무어(David Seymour, Chim), 마르크 리부(Marc Riboud)와 같은 초기 매그넘 작가들의 작품들을 연상시킨다. 비록 1966년 이후에는 광고와 패션을 전문으로하는 사진 스튜디오의 운영에 관심을 기울이게 되지만, 그가 한국전쟁 이후 약 10년 동안 남긴 사진들은 가장 풍성하면서도 인간적인 공감을 불러일으키는 시각적 기록 중 하나로 남아 있다.

หลังจากที่ได้เป็นทหารเกาหลีใต้เข้าร่วมในการสู้รบแนวหน้าระหว่างสงครามเกาหลี (1950-53) Han ได้กลับสู่ชีวิตปกติเมื่อสงครามจบลงและพบกับเมืองที่ถูกทำลาย เขาเลือกเป็นช่างถ่ายภาพและได้เห็นถึงช่วงเวลาแห่งการเปลี่ยนแปลง การสร้างเมืองสมัยใหม่ และสังคมในเกาหลีใต้ ภาพถ่ายของเขาบอกเล่าเรื่องราวเหล่านี้ผ่านการนำเสนอชีวิตประจำวันของคนธรรมดา ผู้ชาย ผู้หญิง และเด็ก เห็นได้จากจุดชมวิว  ในปัจจุบันภาพถ่ายของเขากลายเป็นสิ่งตื่นตาตื่นใจด้วยองค์ประกอบที่ไร้ที่ติ เวลาและความใส่ใจในรายละเอียดของสังคม เขาได้เสนอชิ้นงานที่สูญหายไปนานของช่างภาพอย่าง Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour (Chim) และ Marc Riboud แม้ว่าหลังจาก 1966 Han จะผันความสนใจของตัวเองไปที่โฆษณาและการถ่ายภาพแฟชั่น แต่ภาพถ่ายในช่วงก่อนสงครามที่ผ่านมายังคงเป็นหนึ่งในบันทึกภาพที่น่าเห็นใจที่สุดในปีนั้น

Han Youngsoo (1933-1999) started his photographic career as a member of Shinsunwhue (New Line Group),
an association of socially concerned realist photographers. With the advent of economic prosperity in 1960s

Korea, he established Han’s Photo Studio in 1966; it became a celebrated pioneer of Korean advertising pho-
tography and fashion photography. He played an active role in a number of Korean photography associations

and cultural organizations. Following his death in 1999, his daughter Han Sunjung established the Han Young-
soo Foundation to preserve his negatives and archive and to promote recognition of his accomplishments.

Han Youngsoo’s works have received growing international attention in recent years, and were featured at
the Rencontres d’Arles in 2014. And in 2017, personal exhibition titled ‘Han Youngsoo: Photographs of Seoul
1956–63’ was presented by International Center of Photography(ICP).

한영수(1933-1999)는 사회 문제에 관심을 갖는 한국 최초의 리얼리즘 사진 연구단체인 ‘신선회’에서 사진가로서의 활동을시작했다. 1960년대 한국 경제의 급격한 성장과 함께 그는 한국의 광고 및 패션 사진에 선구자적인 역할을 한 한영수사진연구소를 1966년에 설립했으며, 수많은 사진 단체와 문화 기관에서 주요한 역할을 담당했다. 1999년 작고 후에는 그의 딸 한선정이 한영수문화재단을 설립하여 작가의 필름들과 관련 기록들을 보존하고 그의 업적을 알리기 위해 노력하고 있다. 최근 들어 한영수의 작품에 대한 국제적인 관심은 높아지고 있으며, 2014년에는 아를 포토 페스티벌(Rencontres d’Arles photofestival)에 소개된 바 있다. 그리고 2017년에는 국제사진센터(ICP, International Center of Photography)에서 개인전 <한영수 : 사진으로 본 서울 1956-63)이 개최되었다.
