Photographing Korean historic relics and historical sites, which always disturb my soul with some energy difficult to explain. I suddenly realized that the identity of the energy must be the ‘glittering sadness’ of the recent past.
There excited endless love, Admiration and moderation, and impartial self-censorship about nature’s simplicity and moderate beauty. I belatedly found out that just as trees plant their roots on land , looking up to the sky, korean used to pursue a life in harmony with nature, following the laws of nature. At that time , sadness and repentance filled my heart, and the catharsis I felt has been the source of my willingness to draw closer to korean scenery.
As a photographer reconnecting the world through the space of photos, I grew especially attached to the style of architecture and modeling of korean who create spaces in harmony with scenery. For the past thousand years, Korean built houses as microcosms, locating their living sites in accordance with nature. They constructed houses as microcosm of the harmonious relationship with the heavens, nature and people without any conflict. When I made my way through a faintly light fog like deep breathing emitted by mountain at dawn to capture the original life force of nature and the world of thoughts of the unfathomable scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, I was very pleased to experience ‘mul-ah-il-chi’ , which means oneself becoming whole with an object.
These traditional Korean sculpture become a mirror reflecting the present and the future, not just the remains of the past, due to such beautiful minds oriented to nature. We can truly dream of a sustainable earth only when we realize that nature and humans are one, and when human wisdom aligns itself with the laws of nature, not against it.
